Free crochet cowl pattern - East Wind Cowl for adults and children

With our damp and cold air here in the Pacific Northwest, warm cowls come in really handy! I tested this one out during a windstorm and it performed with flying colors. The child size took me less than an hour from start to finish so this cowl will be great for gifting or markets as well. Customize to your heart's content - get the height and fit you want from the repeating HHDC stitch pattern. For yarn, I LOVE Hue + Me. It's super soft and you can machine wash/dry!

If you can't start your project today, use the image below to pin it for later! :)

A quick little note before we get into the pattern - I have a PDF version of this pattern with a written stitch tutorial and photos of working in the front loops.  It's available as an ad-free PDF file here in the ISCH shop and in my Etsy shop, Ravelry shop, and Ribblr shop!

Pattern notes

Skill level: Intermediate/Advanced Beginner

Finished Measurements (seamed finished product, lying flat):

Teen & Adult: 12" wide x 7" tall

Child: 10" wide x 6" tall

Gauge: 11 HHDC x 8 rows = 5" x 5" swatch. Use instructions from cowl but only ch 12 at beginning and stop at row 8. St count will be 11 at end of each row.

Supplies:

Abbreviations:

ch = chain

st = stitch

sts = stitches

HHDC = Herringbone Half Double Crochet

FLO = Front Loop Only

* * = repeat instructions between the asterisks as many times as directed

Yarn Note:

One of my testers used Brava Bulky, which is designated a Bulky (5) weight yarn. Following the adult size pattern (and using an L hook), her cowl measured at the child size dimensions. Other testers commented that they believe Brava Bulky may not be a true 5-weight yarn as well, so keep in mind that you may need to adjust your hook size and counts with this specific yarn.

Instructions

Teen & Adult Size

Ch 55.

Row 1: HHDC in 2nd st from hook and every st across. Turn. (54 sts)

Row 2: Ch 1. HHDC in first st. HHDC FLO across to second to last st. HHDC in last st. Turn. (54 sts)

Rows 3: Ch 1. HHDC in each st across. Turn. (54 sts)

Rows 4-11: Repeat Rows 2 & 3.

Row 12: Repeat Row 2.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for seaming (approx 15"). Skip down to seaming.

Child Size

Ch 45.

Row 1: HHDC in 2nd st from hook and every st across. Turn. (44 sts)

Row 2: Ch 1. HHDC in first st. HHDC FLO across to second to last st. HHDC in last st. Turn. (44 sts)

Rows 3: Ch 1. HHDC in each st across. Turn. (44 sts)

Rows 4-9: Repeat Rows 2 & 3.

Row 10: Repeat Row 2.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for seaming (approx 14").

Seaming:

(The right side is the side with the lines edging the HHDC pair rows)

With wrong side facing out, bring side edges together. With a large yarn needle, use a whip stitch to seam the sides together. I used about 1 st for every row. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Modifications:

This pattern is easily modified for height and width. For height, just make sure you end on an even row repeat. For width, I would make one of these cowls as written and then see if you want a tighter or looser fit, keeping in mind that it has to go over your head and whatever hairstyle you are sporting that day. You may also want to style it with a coat before deciding if/how to modify. The width can be any stitch count you desire.
